Legislation

H.R. 1722, Telework Improvements Act of 2009 - On March 25, 2009, Congressman John Sarbanes (D-MD) introduced the Telework Improvements Act that calls for improvement of telework programs in Federal agencies and incorporating telework in continuity of operations planning.  The House passed the telework bill (H.R. 1722) on July 14 with a bipartisan vote of 290-131.  The bill requires each executive agency to establish a policy under which employees may be authorized to telework to the maximum extent possible without diminishing employee performance or agency operations.  The Office of Personnel Management (OPM), General Service Administration (GSA), the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will provide oversight and management support to Federal agencies.

S. 707, Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 - The Senate, led by Senators Daniel Akaka (D-HI) and George Voinovich (R-OH), passed the Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 by unanimous consent on May 24, 2010. The bill, a companion to H.R. 1722, will enhance the Federal telework program by requiring agencies to establish a telework policy and designate a telework managing officer.

Public Law 106-346, Department of Transportation and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2001 - On October 23, 2000, H.R.4475 became Public Law 106-346. The law requires that all executive agencies establish telework policies.
