The Telework Exchange Teleworker - January 2009

Avaya Federal Solutions Polycom Verizon Business
Straight Talk on Telework Technology

An oft-cited hurdle involved in getting a telework program underway is determining what hardware, software, and peripheral equipment is needed to ensure that teleworkers are as secure and productive as possible. Telework Exchange worked with leading public and private sector organizations including Avaya Federal Solutions, Polycom, and Verizon to compile "Straight Talk on Telework Technology," a comprehensive whitepaper to better understand available telework technology solutions written for legislators as well as government telework advisors and managers.

"Telework technology requirements will vary by agency, as there is ‘no one-size-fits-all,' approach" the paper notes. "Straight Talk" offers agencies an overview of the products and services available and frequently used by teleworkers, as well as some of the issues to be considered when selecting technology for a telework program.

Among the technology areas covered are collaboration tools, including e-mail, data and visual conferencing, Web collaboration, and telepresence; Internet telephony; laptop computers; mobile phones, smartphones, and personal digital assistants; network infrastructure; security; Software as a Service (SaaS); technical support; and telework training. The paper also provides a listing of additional Web and publication resources.
